Counting stars and reach fifty
or so when the grass
rustles. Opaque forms move
among the trees. Four deer
maybe. Sixteen hooves
bending hundreds of grass blades
in the dark. One moon shadow
floating on the road—mine.
Praying today: The wise men followed a star to find your gift of the Christ child. Abraham gazed at a myriad of stars and heard your promise. Stars have awed, fascinated, guided, humbled and sometimes pointed to faith. Before I get much older, I would like to travel to a place dark enough to count with my own eyes a thousand stars you have made.
Postscript tidbit: After I wrote this, I googled “best places to see stars.” There are two certified star-watching places in the U.S. One is in Utah and the other? Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania! Three hours away. I’m going!!
