“I am weary with my moaning;
every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with weeping.”
Psalm 6:6
Words like “weary,” “flood,” and “drench” came to mind on this rainy day of walking beside the Potomac river, swollen with the spring downpours. Other words like “cold” and “damp” and “hot coffee” drifted by as well. But we certainly weren’t “moaning” and “weeping” like the psalmist as we made our way another ten miles down the trail. Our rain gear kept us reasonably dry, although my buddy Chester couldn’t be bothered with his hood. So perhaps this is a strange psalm verse to reflect upon. A bit depressing? Yet what I appreciate about the psalmist’s lament is that, rather than walking away or hiding one’s emotions, he or she comes to God with honesty to ask for God’s help. Perhaps this is a good day to acknowledge any sadnesses pushed into the corners of my soul. A good day to remind God and myself that I am always in need of God’s help. A good day, most of all, to pray for those I know whose circumstances truly do demand weeping and moaning this day.
