“I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God,
my rock in whom I take refuge.” Psalm 18:1
I notice that the psalmist describes the Lord as “my rock” twice in one sentence, so I’ll assume this repetition was deliberate. It could be that the psalmist was crafting a pattern for the music, or maybe “rock” was simply a really good description for attributes of God that were important to the psalmist. If so, I wonder what they might be? A large rock can be a safe haven from flying arrows. Something to hide behind. A pedestal to make an announcement that needs to be heard. A place to climb and get a better view. A landmark to find one’s way. Shelter from a cold wind, even rain. A hand-warmer after a day of storing the sun’s energy. If it’s flat, a place to stretch out for star-gazing at night. Something to sit back and lean against. Something solid to step on in shifting sand or wet mud. Something that can hold one’s weight. Enduring. Okay, God as “my rock” works!

1. Take this verse with you and ponder its meaning for you throughout the day. What do you notice? What do you wonder? (Clicking on photo enlarges it.) Is there a way God is a “rock” for you today?
2. Or read all of Psalm 18 to discover how this verse fits into the psalm.
3. Or comment with a photo of your own that illustrates this verse’s meaning for you.
Tomorrow’s verse: Psalm 19:1
Starting January 1, 2016, for 150 days I am posting a daily psalm verse with a photo that is a visual meditation on the text for me. Each day a verse from the next psalm is chosen until all 150 psalms have been featured. To participate you may subscribe to my blog at https://elainedent.net or “friend” me on Facebook and watch for the daily links to blog posts. Disclaimer: I am not a photographer and most of the photos are from a cell phone or small camera while hiking the Appalachian Trail or the C&O Canal/Great Allegheny Passage Trail.
