“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.” Psalm 16:6
Reflection: I grew up in Virginia, grew up hiking in the mountains, grew up discovering rattlesnakes and wild turkeys, rhododendron thickets and rocky outcrops gazing over meadows below. I also grew up discovering books and writing and music. So a current hiking adventure that leads me to look out at a valley in my home state at this late stage in life is a rewarding experience. I have received a “goodly heritage,” haven’t I? Yes, I appreciate the softly majestic beauty of this pleasant land I grew up in. Yes, I honor the privilege of hiking 500 miles across it this past spring. But that is not all I honor. I honor my parents who first taught me about the Lord. I honor women and men who kept teaching me, shaping me, encouraging me. Sometimes they encouraged me on to the next thing by means of their own weaknesses and failures. I honor that too, because God transformed even that into my goodly heritage.

Tomorrow’s verse: Psalm 17:8
Starting January 1, 2016, for 150 days I am posting a daily psalm verse with a photo that is a visual meditation on the text for me. Each day a verse from the next psalm is chosen until all 150 psalms have been featured. To participate you may subscribe to my blog at https://elainedent.net or “friend” me on Facebook and watch for the daily links to blog posts. Disclaimer: I am not a photographer and most of the photos are from a cell phone or small camera while hiking the Appalachian Trail or the C&O Canal/Great Allegheny Passage Trail.
