God is my shield,
who saves the upright in heart.
Psalm 7:10
Reflection: Believe it or not, I am nervous around heights, so sometimes I am puzzled by my fascination with hiking mountains. On any kind of cliff or outcropping I prefer a good yard or more from the edge, or sitting down, or holding onto a tough tree. The best of all is a wall to shield me from that tightening feeling in the pit of my stomach and my runaway imagination of falling to the misty valley below. The reality of daily life, however, means that falling and failing happens to me frequently. I am not sure that God shields me from the consequences of my foolishness. But I do trust that God lovingly gives me a way back out of the foolishness. God’s shield for me is not a wall but really one simple action: to begin again by taking a next step in love, toward love.
