So Mondays are the day to take a look at what’s coming up for Sunday. We’re in John 7 this week, so I’m skimming through it, wondering where I will settle. It was a tough chapter to memorize, and I suspect maybe even a tougher one to preach on.
But since we were speaking of doubts a few days ago (and Becca and I did have a great discussion about doubts; see previous post), chapter 7 is full of people wrestling with who Jesus is and coming to various conclusions. Jesus’ brothers taunt him. Others say he is deceiving people. Still others say he is a good man. Nicodemus says give him a fair hearing. Some are afraid to speak openly about him. Some think he is crazy and has a demon. Some say he is a prophet. Others say he is the Messiah and pharisees say his being the messiah is impossible because he was born in the wrong town. The police think Jesus’ speaking is so amazing that they refuse to carry out their assignment to arrest him. The chapter ends with everyone going home and nothing resolved. It’s a doubting mess.
